EXCLUSIVE: Q&A with Ross Philips AKA Tom Long!
Kate here again and this time I had the pleasure of emailing the wonderful Ross Philips for another exclusive just for you guys! We talk about Tom’s adorable engagement to Wanda, his future mother-in-law, and will Tom get a job to support his wifey? Find out below!
Since this is a long one, no pun intended, I’ll get right to it!
My questions are bolded, Ross’ answers are marked with a RP. POSSIBLE SPOILERS!
You’ve been warned!
Tell us about yourself! Who is Ross Philips?
RP: Who is Ross Philips? Woof, thats a philosophical one… I’m not sure I, Ross Philips, know who “Ross Philips” truly IS. In regards to where I’m from that would be the small ski town of Stowe, Vermont. I started doing community theatre there when I was around 7 and so began my love affair with performing. When I was 15 I told my parents that I wanted to do this professionally and that there was a Performing Arts Boarding school about 4 hours away in Natick, MA. I graduated high school there and ended up spending 4 years at Carnegie Mellon University. After school I was sure I would go to NYC to pursue theatre as that was all I had ever experienced. I came out to LA for a week and fell in love with everything about it. That was three years ago.
When I’m not at work (it feels really good to call it work) I’m doing improv around LA, Painting and or seeing alot of live music. Also i play way too much Halo and Call of Duty. I’m super cool like that and totally connect to Tom on that level. In addition to all that i watch just about everything on TV (specifically AMC and NBC). Community, Happy Endings, Workaholics, Breaking Bad and Walking Dead are my favorite shows. I love good unique storytelling and these shows have it down.
I think congrats are in store for your fictional character Tom! He and Wanda are now officially engaged and now a wedding is in store! How will Tom react to all of the wedding planning? Hopefully this means more screen time for Tom!
RP: YES! Se Vre! We’re getting married. I’m off the market. The wedding promises to be even more interesting than the proposal. There’s plenty of Tom time coming up. You guys are gonna be straight up sick of my face after the next couple weeks.
Do you think he is going to freak out and get cold feet or is Tom ready to live forever with Wanda?
RP: Have you seen Mallory Moye? How would you not want to lock that down! I put a ring on it, after her… but you know, it still counts. When Tom says forever, he means FOREVER. A lot of you guys have been saying it on Twitter but Wanda and Tom we’re meant for each other. They are the perfect fit.
Do you have Mallory just have a ball together on set? It seems, on-screen, that you two just get along so well. Is that the case or do you just generally dislike her?
RP: Please dont tell anyone this but she is a total diva. It’s always “Rossy, how are you today?”, “Rossy, You’re so funny!” and “Rossy, that was SUCH a good take!” … ugh. To be honest, Mallory is the epitomy of professionalism. She is an incredible actress (but you all knew that), and everyday I work with her is a blessing. She’s taught me how to be patient. She and I both went to college for this so its nice to work with someone who understands the craft of it all. She knows me better than anyone else on set and I can really talk to her about anything. She’s one of my best friends. Watch for her in the coming years because she’s going to take this business by storm. All that being said, she doesn’t shower. So there’s that.
RP: I had a couple scenes with DJR. Growing up a lot of people told me I reminded them of Topher Grace so I was sort of nonchalantly trying to ask her about him and what it was like to work with him on “That 70′s Show”. That woman is incredible. She told us a story about how one year she had something like 5 pilots fail. IN A YEAR!!! Talk about thick skin. She’s just a great actress. What we in the business call a lifer. She’s not going anywhere. Thats the great thing about working on a show regularly, when you’re young.
These people I get to work with were and continue to be my idols. I remember one of my first episodes Gary Cole was playing Rachel’s dad and I was just gawking at him. He was all “Hi I’m Gary.” I just stared and managed to get out “I know who you are. You’re Lumberg.” Also, Tim Matheson!!! I mean we all went to college after seeing Animal House! The man is a legend, and he’s such a put together actor. He comes in with his script in a binder every week with everything highlighted and all his acting work done. It’s so impressive. It really gives me hope that I’ll be able to continue to do this forever.
Who is the funniest person on set?
RP: In my own mind, ME. In reality, its tough to say. My initial reaction is Mircea. But everyone is so funny in their own way. When I get to do scenes with all the guys (Wilson, Scott, Cress) we always have a great time. Sometimes I’m sure it takes all the director’s patience to get us to shutup and play the scene. This cast is so impressive because we really have become a small town. We all get along so well together. Its just so much fun and that shines through in the work. Because we’re having fun you guys have fun when you watch.
P.S. Also Matt Lowe who plays Meatball. That dude is frackin hilarious.
Are there any other projects that you’re working on?
RS: Pilot season has been crazy. Nothing has really hit yet. I’ve gone out for a good many but nothing that really called to me. Sometimes you go out for projects or characters where you’re like “this is so easy. this makes sense to me.” I was talking to Cress about this the other day and he very sagely said, “it’s a marathon not a sprint.” In the meantime, I’m more than happy to spend my days in Bluebell.
What would you like to see Tom doing in the future? Other than living happily every after with Wanda. (I.E. Rock climbing, hot dog eating contest…)
RP: I want Tom to find a job! He’s got a wife now. “Get on it bro! You got a wife now!” I’d love to see him dress up like Bacon, oh wait, did that. Maybe get dragged by a pack of horses, oh wait, did that. It’d be cool to get Leprosy, OH WAIT, DID THAT!
Honestly anything I can come up with will not to do justice to what I will eventually be doing on this show. The writers give me the best lines and costumes gives me the best stuff to wear. I’m a lucky dude.
9. Final Question, what are some things we can expect from Tom actually doing in the future? Anything you can spoil us on?
RP: Well, we’re gonna be walking down the aisle soon, OR ARE WE?! That’s going to be epic. I’d spoil stuff for you but then you guys wouldnt laugh as hard when I walk out [only wearing] tights with goggles on. Is he joking? He might be joking… I dont think he’s joking! YOU’LL NEVER KNOW!
As you can tell, Ross is a pretty hilarious guy!
